Working it out: Mums and Bubs Workouts

Finding the motivation to exercise might be tough when you’ve just had a baby but it can help your body recover from birth, help you connect with other like-minded mums and can reduce stress. Plus, workouts can be fun!

To help kick-start your exercise journey, we’ve pulled together a list of local post-natal workouts that you can try with your baby in tow. These are gentle or have exercises that are specifically designed to strengthen the muscles that are affected by pregnancy and birth, like your core and pelvic floor, without putting too much pressure on your body.

And while the blog title says ‘Mums and Bubs’ – Dads, you’re more than welcome to join these classes too!

CrossFit is everywhere these days, and anyone can do it. WOF CrossFit’s Mums & Bubs classes operate twice a week on Wednesdays and Fridays at 9.45am so you have double the opportunity to have fun while getting fit. The classes involve varied, functional, body weight movements to help tone and tighten your tummy, arms, bum and thighs.

Exclusive member discount:

  • Six-week course, one session per week: $51 (normally $60)
  • Six-week course, two sessions per week: $75 (normally $100)

Porirua’s new boutique fitness studio offers a Mums & Bubs Pilates class on Wednesdays at 10.30am, focused on regaining core and pelvic floor strength and control, to prepare you for further exercise. Suitable from six weeks post birth or when you feel comfortable, this gentle class is an enjoyable, low-intensity work out great for getting out there with other mums.

Studio 4 also offer Pregnancy Pilates course which combines Pilates, Barre and functional exercises that are safe and can be adapted to any stage of pregnancy.

Exclusive member discount:

  • Casual class: $12.75 (normally $15)
  • 10-trip pass: $110.50 (normally $130)

This one is great for your coffee groups to head along to! On the first Thursday of every month, Sport Wellington hosts a free Buggy Walk in a different location around the greater Wellington region. Just come along with your buggy, baby and friends, and enjoy a free L’affare coffee and yummy treat before heading off for some exercise. Walks vary in length but are generally around the 5km mark.

City Fitness Johnsonville: BuggyFit

City Fitness members can now hit the gym with baby. BuggyFit classes are specifically designed for new Mums and Dads to workout. Held at City Fitness Johnsonville at 10.30am on Mondays and Wednesdays, the class combines step cardio and weights and is adaptable to suit your fitness level. A City Fitness membership is required for these classes – prices start from $6.99/week

Xtend Barre: Babies on Board

Throughout the year, Xtend Barre in Petone and Wellington run eight-week Babies on Board courses. These barre-based, full-body workouts are designed to help build strength and fitness post-pregnancy with other mums. During the class, you’ll occasionally wear your baby in a sling or carrier so you can enjoy working out together – no dance experience is required. Eight-week courses are $139
